Thank God for Pneumonia

Children’s pictures of Eden always include friendly tigers and gentle bears, contented to share the sunshine of their garden paradise with their friends Adam and Eve.  The big creatures aren’t the only ones in the garden, though; there are smaller things that may be even more ferocious.  Sometimes my wife and I reflect on the little pests,  the mosquitoes and the bread mold and the flu, and ask ourselves, “I wonder what they were like before the Fall?  What good did viruses do before sin entered the world?”

We don’t know yet, but I recently added a phrase to my daily thoughts:  “Thank God for pneumonia.”  A bout with swine flu left me with a secondary cold that turned into pneumonia.  That infection led to a chest X-ray, and two days later a phone call from my doctor.

“You need to go straight to the hospital.  We’ve ordered a CT scan for you ..."
