Ready To Launch
By Rachael Carman

As of July 17, 2009, only fifty-three days remain until Davis and I take our oldest son, Charles, to Georgia where he will participate in the Impact360 gap-year program in partnership with Union University and Chick-Fil-A. It seems strange to be so aware of the date when he will leave.

Thirteen years ago I was counting down the days until the little yellow school bus would arrive at the end of our road and take Charles away for his first day of school. I was looking forward to that day—the day I thought of as my liberation. I was so impatient for the day to arrive. I was excited to “get my life back.” I still had Anderson and Savannah Anne at home, but they were more compliant and easier to handle. They wouldn’t get in the way of the many projects I wanted to complete or the people I wanted to meet. I had plans for a women’s Bible study, exercise, scrapbooking, decorating, and lunching with friends. Yes, this would be my year. It was all coming together, and I waited eagerly and impatiently for the first day of school.

The count-down didn’t end as planned . . .

Apologia Educational Ministries is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2009 Mike Pence Award for Academic Excellence. Apologia offers the scholarship, which is named for the Indiana congressman and supporter of homeschooling and other family-related causes, to an Indiana student who was homeschooled through high school and plans to attend a four-year college or university. This year's recipient is Laura McMillion, the daughter of Jim and Sandy McMillion of Franklin, IN. The renewable scholarship of $2000 per year will help fund her studies at Baylor University in Texas, where she plans to major in linguistics and international studies.

Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day
By Jeannie Fulbright

When your children complete this study of zoology, they will never view nature in the same way again! Their eyes will be open to the different species that surround them, and they'll enjoy and understand nature to the fullest. Vacations will become educational experiences as they notice birds and insects inhabiting the areas they visit. By learning to keep a field journal, they will be able to notice unusual circumstances or sudden increases in bird or insect populations. In other words, they'll become true scientists as they come to know nature and the fascinating world that God created!

In Zoology 1, your children will begin exploring the dynamics of flight and learn about animal classification, understanding why the design of these incredible creatures points us to our Creator God. Then, they will take off on an exciting educational adventure into the world of birds! Your children will discover how to attract and identify birds in your yard, observing their special characteristics, diverse nests, and interesting domestic life. They will also delve into the anatomy and the glorious design that enables birds to do remarkable things. The text contains actual experiments on the preferences and habits of the birds your children see.

Next they'll investigate explore the world of bats, unearthing the value of these creatures of the night in our world and exposing common misconceptions about these docile animals. After bats comes entomology, the study of insects, where they will learn how to classify insects in your yard by a simple glance at their wings and other characteristics. They'll design experiments with flies, crickets, moths, and caterpillars, and determine how to attract and catch insects for scientific study.

The popular Young Explorer series is designed for students in K-6 and can be used to teach children at different grade levels, saving you time and energy!  The series includes books on astronomy, botany, and zoology.
